Poker Venues in South Africa: Which Casinos Actually Deal Poker
South Africa has more casinos than almost anywhere else on the continent, and a lot of them list "poker" on the gaming page. Most of the time that word does not mean what a poker player means by it. This page covers the venues we have verified, and is honest about which ones are worth a drive.

The single most useful distinction
A South African casino floor can carry a game called Raise 'Em Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Three Card Poker or Heads-Up Hold'em. Every one of those is dealer-banked: you play against the house on a fixed pay table, the casino holds the mathematical edge by design, and the other people at the table are not competing with you for the same pot. A poker room is the opposite - players against each other, the house taking a rake or a tournament fee for running the game.
Both can be called poker. Only one gives a strong player an edge. Before travelling, it is worth asking the casino the direct question: is the poker player-versus-player, and are tables running on the day I arrive?
What we found on the Tsogo Sun estate
Reading each property's own gaming page, the pattern is clear. Emerald Casino at Vanderbijlpark and The Ridge Casino at eMalahleni both deal Raise 'Em Poker - banked, not a poker room. Blackrock Casino in Newcastle lists "poker" among its tables without saying which kind, so it remains unconfirmed. Garden Route Casino at Mossel Bay, Mykonos Casino at Langebaan, The Caledon Casino, Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg, Emnotweni Casino in Mbombela and Hemingways Casino in East London name no poker game at all.
That is not a criticism of those floors. They are slot-and-table venues serving their regions, and a verified "no poker here" is more useful to a travelling player than an optimistic maybe.
Where the real poker is
The live tournament activity in South Africa concentrates in Gauteng, with Durban and Cape Town behind it. The group-run series play out at the larger metropolitan properties, and Emperors Palace in Kempton Park has long been the country's best-known tournament address. If a trip is being planned around poker rather than around a holiday that happens to have a casino attached, plan it around Johannesburg.
How to read these pages
Every venue page here records what the operator itself published, with the date it was read and a link to the page. Where a casino does not itemise its table games, we say so rather than guessing - an unlisted table mix is noted as unverified, not as an absence. Opening hours in particular move with the season and at management's discretion, so treat them as a guide and phone ahead for anything that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is Raise 'Em Poker the same as poker?
No. It is a dealer-banked table game played against the house on a fixed pay table. A poker room is player-versus-player, with the house taking a rake or tournament fee instead of holding a betting edge.
Which South African casino is best known for poker tournaments?
Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Gauteng, has the longest-running reputation as the country's main tournament address, and the live scene broadly centres on Johannesburg.
Why do some venue pages here say the poker offer is unverified?
Because the casino's own page does not itemise its table games. We publish what the operator states and flag what it does not, rather than inferring a yes or a no.
Can I play online poker from South Africa?
Online gambling law in South Africa is restrictive and has been the subject of long-running reform debate. This site provides general information only, not legal advice, and anyone unsure of their position should take advice locally.
