Poker in New Zealand - card rooms, tournaments and the new online rules

New Zealand is a small poker country that punches above its weight. Live play is concentrated in a handful of casinos - SkyCity Auckland runs the only dedicated poker room of any size, Christchurch Casino calls itself the home of New Zealand poker, and Grand Casino Dunedin runs a tournament programme in the far south. Online, the country has just acquired a licensing regime on paper, though no licences have been issued yet.

Where live poker actually runs

The SkyCity Auckland poker room is the centre of the New Zealand game. It sits on Level 3, above the main casino floor, and runs cash games and tournaments seven days a week - No-Limit Hold'em from $2/$3 up to $5/$10 and Pot Limit Omaha across the same range, with a 10% rake capped at $15 or $20 depending on stakes. Its tournament calendar is a rolling monthly card rather than a once-a-year festival, built around a headline event each month with satellites feeding it.

Christchurch Casino opens its poker room Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm, with Hold'em at $1/$3 and $2/$5 and Omaha at $1/$2 and $5/$5, and manages its waiting list by text message and kiosk. Grand Casino Dunedin runs poker inside a wider tournament programme open to its Grand Rewards members, but does not publish a standing fixture list.

One rule surprises visitors: the minimum age for a New Zealand casino floor is 20, not 18. And since SkyCity moved to carded play you need a SHOW by SkyCity or Premier Rewards card to take a seat in any game there, cash or tournament.

The players

New Zealand's all-time money list is led by Sosia Jiang of Auckland, whose $6.1 million is roughly two and a half times the total of Lee Nelson in second - and who is the only New Zealander who plays the international super high roller circuit as a regular. Nelson, the 2006 Aussie Millions champion, is the veteran of the group and a genuine mixed-game player. Tong Li is a Pot Limit Omaha specialist who won the $25,000 PLO High Roller at the 2022 World Series. Thomas Ward of Wellington built his record on the Asian circuit, and Hamish Crawshaw of the Manawatu is the most prolific of all, with 89 live cashes.

What that list shows is that the New Zealand game is an export business. Almost every large result on it was won in Australia, Macau, Manila or Las Vegas. The domestic calendar produces good tournaments, not career-defining ones.

Online poker and the new law

Until 2026 New Zealand had no domestic online casino licensing at all. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 has now commenced and its regulations are published, but the Department of Internal Affairs says implementation is being phased in and is not expected to be fully operational until 2027. The department still has to design the licensing system, build its compliance infrastructure and run the licensing process itself - expressions of interest, an auction, then assessment of applications, with the right to apply awarded competitively.

So no operator holds a New Zealand online casino licence today. DIA notes in the same breath that online casino gambling is not new here and that New Zealanders use hundreds of overseas gambling websites every day.

Tax

New Zealand has no capital gains tax and gambling winnings are not generally treated as income for a recreational player. Someone whose poker play amounts to a business is in a different position. Again, that is a question for an accountant rather than a poker site.
