SkyCity's Waikato casino is one of the few venues outside Auckland and Christchurch where New Zealanders can still sit down to player-versus-player Texas Hold'em. The casino itself is the larger part of the operation — more than 330 gaming machines and 23 table games over a single floor — but the poker is deliberately small and fixed to the weekend: two Hold'em tables run every Saturday and Sunday from 4pm until late.
Registration is handled by text rather than at a desk. The list opens at 3pm on both days and players text the venue's poker phone; the first eighteen names are drawn at random into seats and everyone after that goes onto a waiting list. In practice that means arriving late on a Saturday is a waiting-list proposition rather than a seat.
It is worth separating the three games on the floor that carry the word poker, because only one of them is poker in the sense a tournament player means. The Saturday and Sunday Hold'em tables are players against each other. Ultimate Texas Hold'em, open daily from 4pm, and Three Card Poker, open Thursday to Sunday from 6pm, are both dealt against the house — the casino is your opponent and the edge is fixed. Table availability at all three is stated as subject to staffing.
Entry is restricted to age 20 and over, and SkyCity now requires carded play: a SHOW by SkyCity card or a valid Premier Rewards card is needed to play any game, and the dealer will ask for it before you take a hand. Accepted identification for signing up is a current passport, a New Zealand or Australian driver's licence, a current New Zealand firearms licence, or an overseas national identity card carrying a signature or biometric data. The casino is open from 10am to 4am Monday to Thursday with last entry at 3.20am, from 10am on Friday, and around the clock on Saturday and Sunday, closing only for Christmas Day, Good Friday and between 3am and 1pm on Anzac Day.
