GGPoker UK: the Gambling Commission licence, verification and the tax position

GGPoker serves the United Kingdom through GGPoker.uk, licensed by the Gambling Commission. British players get the GG network's scale with a sterling cashier and the protections a Commission licence carries. Is GGPoker licensed for British players?

Online gambling offered to players in Great Britain is regulated by the Gambling Commission, and a room serving British customers is expected to hold a Commission licence. GGPoker's UK-facing site operates under one. The check worth making yourself is on the domain in front of you rather than the brand: GG runs separately licensed entities for different markets, and only the UK one is licensed here.

What verification actually requires

The Commission's player guidance states that all online gambling businesses must ask you to prove your age and identity before you gamble, and that a customer cannot place a bet until they have been verified. Where an account can be matched electronically - against databases such as the electoral roll or credit reference agencies - the check can be instant; otherwise a passport, driving licence or household bill may be requested.

Two points in that guidance are worth a British player's attention. First, a business cannot require proof of age and identity as a condition of withdrawal if it could have asked earlier, and the Commission says a delay of that kind may breach Licence Condition 17 and attract regulatory action. Second, affordability questions are real and the Commission describes them openly: operators may seek bank statements or information about income patterns as part of anti-money-laundering and customer-interaction duties, and may set deposit or loss thresholds with reference to income. None of that is unique to GGPoker; it applies across the licensed market.

The tax position

HMRC's Business Income Manual states at BIM22017 that having a system for placing bets, or being successful enough to earn a living by gambling, does not make the activity a trade. The guidance quotes Graham v Green on the case of a skilful card player who plays daily and wins, and concludes that expertise or being systematic is not enough to create a trade of professional gambling. Winnings are therefore not treated as trading income.

The manual also notes the boundary: some professional gamblers do carry on a trade, for instance where they are paid appearance money for a television programme, because that is a service to a customer for reward. This is general information rather than tax advice, and a player earning mainly from sponsorship, streaming or appearances has a question for an accountant rather than a glossary.

What the room offers

Scale is the reason to play here.
