Poker in Taiwan: online rooms, the club scene and the law

Taiwan has become Asia's most surprising poker hotspot. Taipei hosts some of the largest tournament festivals on the continent, the Asian Poker Tour has made the city its home base, and players such as James Chen, Pete Chen and Justin Chu compete at the highest level worldwide. At the same time, gambling for money remains a criminal offence and no online poker site is licensed in Taiwan. Here is how the two facts fit together.

Is poker legal in Taiwan?

Article 266 of Taiwan's Criminal Code makes gambling in a public place, or a place open to the public, an offence, and the operation of gambling premises is punished more heavily. Online gambling is treated the same way and Taiwan has no licensing regime for it; the only legal betting products are the Public Welfare Lottery and Taiwan Sports Lottery. Live poker has nevertheless flourished because the game is organised as a competition of skill under sport-style club rules rather than as casino gambling: players pay an entry fee to a club, prizes are structured as competition awards, and the Chinese Texas Hold'em Poker Association and similar bodies sanction events. Authorities have raided some venues in recent years, so the model is tolerated rather than formally protected. Live poker in Taipei

Taipei is where the action is. The Asian Poker Tour stages several festivals a year in the city, including the APT Championship in November and APT Taipei in spring, with fields in the thousands and super high rollers that draw Hong Kong's and Thailand's elite. Local clubs run daily tournaments and cash tables under the competition model. If you are visiting, you will find a livelier tournament calendar than in most European capitals.

Online poker for Taiwanese players

Natural8, the Asian-facing site of the GG network, has a large Taiwanese community with Traditional Chinese support, and CoinPoker is a crypto-only option. GGPoker's main site does not serve Taiwan, and WPT Global's own terms and conditions list Taiwan among its excluded territories, so we do not list it. Deposits typically run through e-wallets or crypto because Taiwanese card issuers block gambling transactions. There is no specific tax on gambling winnings for individuals, but income from professional play can be assessable; ask an accountant if poker is your profession.
