Poker in Chile: the law, where to play online and the live scene

Chile has one of South America's most developed casino industries and no framework at all for online gambling — a gap that has left Chilean players on international sites for two decades, and the country's best online player with $13m in winnings nobody at home regulates.

The legal position

Chile licenses and regulates land-based casinos through the Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego, an agency created by the 2005 casino law, and the country has a substantial licensed casino industry as a result.

Online gambling is the gap. Chile has repeatedly debated an online licensing bill without enacting one, so there is no Chilean licence for an online poker room to hold and no domestic regulator supervising online play. Chilean players use international sites.

Nothing in Chilean law makes it an offence for an individual to play poker online. The legal questions have concerned operators and payment processing rather than players. What that means in practice

No Chilean licence means no Chilean consumer protection: no local regulator to complain to, no domestic dispute resolution, no locally enforced self-exclusion. Choose an operator on the strength of its own licence and its record, because that is all that stands behind your balance.

Check withdrawal routes before depositing meaningfully. Peso handling and the local payment rails vary more between rooms than the lobbies suggest.

Live poker

Chile's licensed casinos spread poker, and the country sits on a well-travelled circuit — Chilean players are regulars at the Brazilian Series of Poker in São Paulo and, historically, at the Latin American Poker Tour's Medellín stops.

The minimum gambling age at Chilean casinos is 18.
