Poker in Alberta: the new regulated market, and why no one deals yet
Alberta is the most interesting province in Canadian poker right now, and also the least playable. A regulated market opened in July 2026, several poker brands have registered — and not one of them is dealing a hand.

What changed in July 2026
Alberta opened Canada's second regulated online gambling market on 13 July 2026. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) registers operators and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) licenses them to run games. More than twenty brands went live at launch, nearly all sportsbooks and online casinos.
The minimum gambling age in Alberta is 18.
Why there is still no regulated poker
GGPoker received AGLC registration on 12 August 2026 but has not been licensed by the AiGC to operate. PokerStars, BetMGM, 888, party and BetRivers are registered on the same basis. Registration is a step, not a door.
The obstacle is liquidity. Alberta's framework requires online poker to run ring-fenced at first — Albertans playing only against other Albertans. The province has under five million residents, which is a thin base for cash games and thinner still for tournament guarantees. Regulators have said talks about pooling players with Ontario, or internationally, are continuing, but nothing has been agreed.
The date to watch
13 October 2026 ends the transition period and settles which operators may legally keep serving Albertans. Until that passes, anyone in Alberta playing online poker is playing outside the new provincial framework rather than inside it. We will update this page when the position is clear.
Live poker in Alberta
The province's live rooms are unaffected by any of this. Calgary and Edmonton both have casino poker, and Alberta's charity-casino model means the rake structure differs from Ontario's — a share of proceeds goes to licensed charities working the floor.
Tax
Canada does not tax recreational gambling winnings. Poker played as a business can be assessed as income, and the test is fact-specific. General information, not legal or tax advice.
