ClubWPT Gold in Alberta: sweepstakes poker while the market waits
Alberta is in an unusual position: a regulated online gambling market opened in July 2026, several poker brands are registered, and not one of them is dealing a hand. That is the gap the sweepstakes model currently fills.

Where Alberta stands
Alberta opened Canada's second regulated online gambling market on 13 July 2026. The AGLC registers operators and the Alberta iGaming Corporation licenses them. GGPoker registered with the AGLC on 12 August 2026 but has not been licensed to operate, and PokerStars, BetMGM, 888, party and BetRivers are in the same position.
The obstacle is liquidity: Alberta requires poker to run ring-fenced within a province of under five million people. Talks about pooling with Ontario or internationally are continuing but nothing is agreed. A 13 October 2026 deadline settles which operators may keep serving Albertans at all — we will update this page when it does.
What a sweepstakes room is
ClubWPT Gold runs on a dual-currency model rather than selling chips: a valueless play currency, and a promotional currency redeemable for prizes that can also be obtained for free. That free route is what distinguishes it legally from real-money gambling.
The games are poker. The legal machinery is closer to a prize promotion, and the consumer protections that attach to a licensed gambling operator do not attach here in the same way. Worth knowing before you sign up rather than after.
Availability
ClubWPT Gold operates across most of Canada, excluding Québec. Eligibility rules change without notice — check the operator's own terms at sign-up rather than any list, including ours.
Alberta's minimum gambling age is 18, the lowest in the country alongside Manitoba and Québec.
What to read first
The redemption terms. How promotional currency becomes a prize, the minimum redemption threshold and how long verification takes matter far more than the welcome offer.
