Poker in Argentina: province-by-province licensing explained

Argentina is the most fragmented gambling market in the Americas: twenty-four jurisdictions, twenty-four sets of rules, and no national law tying them together. Where you live in Argentina decides what is licensed for you.

No national law — twenty-four of them

Argentina is a federal country and gambling was never federalised. Each province, plus the autonomous city of Buenos Aires, regulates its own. There is no Argentine equivalent of a national licence, and an operator licensed in one province is not thereby licensed in the next.

Roughly fifteen jurisdictions now regulate online gaming in some form. The most developed frameworks are in Buenos Aires Province, the City of Buenos Aires (CABA), Chubut, Córdoba, La Rioja, Mendoza, San Juan and Santa Fe. Others — Catamarca, Corrientes, Formosa, Jujuy, La Pampa, Misiones, Salta — have licensing but less built out. A further group regulates land-based gambling only, and Santiago del Estero permits online bingo alone.

The two authorities worth knowing by name: **LOTBA**, which licenses online gaming in the City of Buenos Aires, and **IPLyC**, which does the same for Buenos Aires Province. LOTBA has also acted against unlicensed sites and against influencers promoting them, so the provincial regimes are enforced rather than nominal.

What that means for poker

The provincial licences were built around sports betting and online casino. Dedicated online poker is not the centre of any of them, which is why Argentine players have historically used international rooms — and why the country's competitive scene revolves around live events rather than a domestic online pool.

Check your own province before assuming a site is licensed where you are. A brand advertising heavily in Buenos Aires may hold nothing in Córdoba.

The live scene

Argentina's Circuito Argentino de Poker is the domestic tour, with regular stops in Buenos Aires and Rosario, and it is where the country's own champions are made — Andres Korn won the CAP Buenos Aires High Roller twice in 2023 alone.

Argentina punches far above its weight

For a country with no unified market, the results are remarkable. Jose Ignacio 'Nacho' Barbero is 40th on the world all-time money list with $30.3m. Alejandro Lococo — the rapper Papo MC — won the $500,000 Triton Million bracelet at WSOP Paradise in December 2024 for $12,070,000. Maria Lampropulos won both the partypoker MILLIONS and the PCA Main Events within nine months.
