Live poker tournaments in Norway: the one championship the law allows
There is no Norwegian tournament circuit to list. Norwegian law permits one national championship in tournament poker per year, hosted by pre-approved nationwide non-profit organisations under a permit from the gambling regulator. That championship, the Norgesmesterskap i poker at Thon Congress Gardermoen beside Oslo Airport, is the whole of legal Norwegian live tournament poker. This page also lists a second championship that carries almost the same name but is played in Slovakia; the difference matters and is explained below.

One championship inside Norway, by law
The permit for 2026 to 2030 is held by three Norwegian charities, Gynkreftforeningen, Norges Doveforbund and Blodkreftforeningen, working with Adlers Gate AS. It comes with ceilings no other national championship has to work around. The main event may admit at most 5,000 entrants. A player's total loss across the whole series is capped at NOK 20,000. The maximum first prize is NOK 2 million.
Those numbers explain the shape of the schedule. When the top of the payout structure is fixed, the organisers add titles rather than raise buy-ins, which is why a ten-day Norwegian championship carries more distinct formats than festivals several times its size.
Two championships share the name, and only one is the permitted one
Read the listings below with this in mind, because the two are easy to conflate and an earlier version of this page did conflate them.
The records under the series name Norgesmesterskap i poker (Norge) are the permitted Norwegian championship, played in Norway at Thon Congress Gardermoen. The 2026 edition ran 25 September to 4 October and the organisers now publish a return from 2 to 10 October 2027.
The records under Norgesmesterskapet i poker are a separate event, played at Banco Casino in Bratislava, Slovakia, with its 2027 edition from 3 to 14 March. It is organised independently, it is outside the Norwegian permit regime, and none of the Norwegian statutory ceilings above apply to it. Both organisers' own sites were read on 14 October 2026 to settle this.
The 2026 Norwegian edition
The 2026 series ran from 25 September to 4 October. The NOK 5,000 Main Event played three starting days and a four-day run to the title. Around it sat a full set of championships: the Open Nordic Championship and a turbo version of it, Mixed 8-Game, Pot Limit Omaha, Big Bet Mix, Mixed ROE, a Heads Up championship capped at 64 players, an under-25 championship, a Senior Event for players over 50, a Ladies Event, a Mystery Bounty, a Cashout event, Team Poker capped at 180 and Open Face Chinese Pineapple capped at 81. Buy-ins ran from NOK 1,000 for the beginners' and hospitality-trade events to NOK 10,000 for the High Roller.
The organisers reported a Main Event field of 608 entries, cut to 62 players going into the 4 October final day. Against a legal cap of 5,000 entrants, that is a reminder that the entrant limit is not what constrains Norwegian live poker. The once-a-year rule is.
Planning around it
Because the Norwegian series is annual and the venue fixed, it is one of the easier festivals in Europe to plan for: a single hotel complex at Oslo Airport, a programme published well in advance, and pre-registration the organisers encourage because several events carry player caps. Events with a cap, Heads Up, Team Poker and Open Face Chinese, are the ones to register for early. The 2027 dates are already published.
If you are looking for more than ten days of poker
Norwegian players who want a regular tournament schedule travel, usually to Scandinavian or wider European stops, which is also why the Norwegian all-time money list is built almost entirely from results won abroad. Our Norway market page sets out the legal position on playing online from Norway, honestly, including where it is unfavourable for the player.
This page is general information about how the Norwegian permit works, not legal advice. Buy-ins and dates are taken from the organisers' own programmes and carry the date we read them.
Frequently asked questions
How many poker tournaments are held in Norway each year?
One championship series. Norwegian law permits a single national tournament poker championship per year. In 2026 it ran from 25 September to 4 October at Thon Congress Gardermoen, and it returns 2 to 10 October 2027.
Why are two different championships listed here?
Because two events carry near-identical Norwegian names. One is the permitted championship played inside Norway at Thon Congress Gardermoen. The other is played at Banco Casino in Bratislava, Slovakia, is organised separately, and falls outside the Norwegian permit regime, so the statutory caps on entrants, losses and first prize do not apply to it. We file them under separate series names.
What does the Norwegian Main Event cost to enter?
NOK 5,000, with three starting days. The 2026 edition drew 608 entries according to the organisers.
Is there a cap on winnings at the Norwegian championship?
Yes, for the event played in Norway. The permit caps the maximum first prize at NOK 2 million, limits the main event to 5,000 entrants, and caps a player's total loss across the series at NOK 20,000. These caps are a condition of the Norwegian permit and do not bind the separately organised Bratislava event.
Who runs the Norwegian championship?
For the 2026 to 2030 permit term it is run by three nationwide non-profits, Gynkreftforeningen, Norges Doveforbund and Blodkreftforeningen, together with Adlers Gate AS.
Which 2026 events had player caps?
The Heads Up championship was capped at 64, Team Poker at 180 and Open Face Chinese Pineapple at 81. The organisers advise registering early for those.
