GGPoker in Ireland: the licence named, the tax position and the live scene

Ireland is an unusual market in European poker: an English-speaking country inside the EU where the international rooms still operate directly, rather than through a nationally licensed subsidiary. That has consequences worth understanding before you pick a room — starting with which company you are contracting with.

Why Ireland looks different

Most large European markets have gone national — Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France and Italy all require a local licence, and the big operators run walled-off local sites with local player pools. Ireland has not gone down that road, so Irish players sit in international player pools rather than a ring-fenced domestic one.

For a poker player that is the single biggest practical difference, and it cuts in Ireland's favour: bigger fields, bigger guarantees, and games running at every hour rather than only at local peak times.

Ireland's gambling framework has been undergoing reform, with a dedicated regulator being established to oversee licensing and advertising. Expect the position to tighten over time — but as things stand, the international rooms serve Irish players directly.

The "international licence", named

That phrase gets used loosely, so here is what it actually is. The international ggpoker.com platform is operated by GG International Limited, incorporated in the Isle of Man, registered office The Hubb, Queen Victoria House, Victoria Street, Douglas, IM1 2LF. It holds a licence from the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, issued under the Online Gambling Regulations Act 2001 on 15 October 2020. Isle of Man law governs the player agreement and gambling debts are enforceable there, which is the part that matters if a dispute ever outgrows customer support. It is worth being precise about the scope, because the GG group is not one company. Separately licensed GG-group brands serve the Netherlands, Ontario, the United Kingdom and Romania, and Germany's ggpoker.de is operated by NSUS Malta Limited on the German regulator's whitelist. Ireland has no local GG brand, so Irish players deal with the Isle of Man entity — and an Irish player is not a GGPokerUK customer, despite the shared language and the shared marketing.

Tax

Ireland does not tax gambling winnings as income for recreational players. Betting duty falls on operators, not on players, and there is no equivalent of the withholding regimes you find in Ukraine or the United States.

The live calendar matters here
