A side bet between players in the same tournament on who will survive further. It is settled purely on finishing order between the participants and has nothing to do with the official prize pool.
Last longers range from two friends putting up a small amount to organised pools involving dozens of players in a major event. They are private arrangements, which is exactly why rooms watch them: a large last longer changes what a player's tournament life is worth and creates an incentive that the tournament rules did not put there.
Most operators require side bets to be disclosed or prohibit them among players at the same table, and any arrangement that could lead to soft play is a rules problem regardless of what it is called.
