Staking
An arrangement where an investor pays part or all of a player's buy-ins in exchange for a share of the profit. 'Selling action' at markup, and long-term 'backing' with make-up, are the two common forms.

What is staking in poker?
An arrangement where a backer pays some or all of a player's buy-in in exchange for an agreed share of the winnings.
What is markup?
Selling a share for more than its face value — selling 10 per cent of a €1,000 buy-in for €120 rather than €100 is 1.2 markup. Buyers accept it when they rate the player highly enough to expect a return anyway.
What is makeup?
Accumulated losses a staked player must repay out of future winnings before profit is split again. Deep makeup is the most common reason staking deals turn sour; agree in writing how and when it resets.
