Casino Cosmopol Stockholm (closed)
Stockholm · Sweden
Casino Cosmopol Stockholm is closed permanently, and with it the whole of Sweden's state casino chain. Svenska Spel's own notice states that after the Riksdag's decision to wind up the state casinos it received an amended owner directive from the government on 24 April instructing that the Stockholm casino be wound up, and that it consequently closed the casino permanently from 25 April. The notice does not print the year alongside those two April dates; the closures it does date are Sundsvall in 2020 and Göteborg and Malmö in February 2024, with Stockholm, the last of the four, following them.
The operator gives declining profitability and falling visitor numbers as the background, as players moved to online casino play. The consequence for poker is set out on the same notice in plain terms: because all land-based casinos are to be prohibited, nobody has the right to offer cash games, while tournament poker may to some extent be run under a special licence. Svenska Spel's online casino is unaffected.
This page exists because the venue is still widely listed as operating. It is not. Anyone looking for live poker in Sweden should look to the two addresses that hold a land-based card-game licence, in Stockholm and Malmö, and should expect tournaments only.
