Unibet Poker Netherlands: the KSA licence, Cruks and the Unibet Open

Unibet is one of the rooms that came through the Dutch licensing process rather than around it. On its own Dutch site the company states that it received a licence from the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) to offer online gambling legally in the Netherlands, and gives the date of that grant as 8 June 2022 — roughly eight months after the regulated market opened.

For a Dutch player that date matters less than what the licence carries with it, so this page sets out the obligations, what the Dutch poker lobby contains, and how to check a licence claim without taking anyone's word for it.

Is Unibet licensed in the Netherlands?

Unibet says so on unibet.nl, in the licensing notice it is required to publish: the site holds a Kansspelautoriteit licence permitting it to offer online gambling services legally in the Netherlands, granted by the Kansspelautoriteit on 8 June 2022. The same notice carries the standard Dutch warning that taking part in gambling can be addictive.

You do not have to rely on the operator's own statement. The KSA points players at the Kansspelwijzer, its official checker, and tells them to look up the app, website or casino before playing rather than after. That is the primary source for any licence claim, including this one.

What a Dutch licence obliges the room to do

The Dutch regime is built around player protection rather than around the size of the bonus. A licensed room must connect to Cruks — the Centraal register uitsluiting kansspelen, the national self-exclusion register — and check you against it before you play. Any player who wants to stop can register a gokstop in Cruks themselves, through cruksregister.nl, and every licensed Dutch operator is then closed to them. The KSA also signposts OpenOverGokken for anyone worried about their own gambling or someone else's.

Identity verification and deposit limits set at registration follow from the same licence, and advertising and bonuses are restricted to adults. None of this is optional for a licensed room, which is the practical difference between a Dutch-licensed site and an international one.

What the Dutch poker lobby offers

Unibet runs a full poker section on the Dutch site rather than a token one. Alongside the cash tables there is a published tournament schedule, a poker promotions page, a set of strategy guides, and — the part regular players care about — the Unibet Open, the room's own live festival, which has its own section on the site.

Unibet Poker's long-standing design choice is worth knowing before you sit down: the room has built its reputation on recreational-friendly tables rather than on volume play, and its UK pages describe anonymous seating and a ban on tracking software. Expect the Dutch client to feel closer to that than to a high-volume grinder's room.

Tax, and the honest caveat

On a Dutch-licensed room the operator accounts for the gambling tax, so a player's winnings are not taxed again. On an unlicensed foreign site, kansspelbelasting can in principle fall on the player instead. That is one of the quieter arguments for staying inside the licensed market.
