WinStar's 55-table poker room is temporarily closed, and north Texas feels it first

WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma still publishes a poker page describing the room it built: 55 tables, non-smoking, dedicated to cash games and tournaments, dealing No Limit Texas Hold'em, Omaha and Congress. Directly above that description, read on 7 October 2026, sits a closure notice. Poker is listed alongside bingo, off-track betting, The Ring 2 and the Red River Grill among operations that are temporarily closed until further notice. No reopening date is given and the notice asks players to check back.

The room's size is only half the story. WinStar sits just over the Red River on the Oklahoma side of the Texas border, roughly an hour's drive north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and Texas does not license casino poker. For a great many north Texan players WinStar has been the nearest legal casino poker room, which is a large part of why a room that size could be filled at all in a town of Thackerville's size.

With it shut, the live options narrow to two kinds of alternative. Inside Texas there are the membership-based card clubs, which operate on a different legal footing — players pay for access and time rather than the house taking a rake. Outside it, the other Oklahoma tribal rooms stay open: Choctaw Casino & Resort at Durant runs 27 tables and hosts both WSOP and WPT events, and Riverwind at Norman, nearer Oklahoma City, opens daily from 9am to 3am.

Two cautions. A temporary closure is exactly the kind of status that changes without an announcement, so the notice should be re-checked before anyone plans a trip around it. And the page gives no reason for the closure — we are reporting what the operator published, not why.
