Japan's biggest festival returns to Shinjuku in October — and its Main Event has no buy-in

The Japan Open Poker Tour's third Tokyo stop of the season opens on 8 October at Bellesalle Takadanobaba in Shinjuku and runs five days, with eighty-one numbered tournaments on the schedule the tour has now published.

The headline events sit on the weekend. NLH Platinum on 10 October costs 500,000 yen for a 200,000-point stack and NLH Crown on 11 October costs 300,000, both sponsored by the Asian Poker Tour, with a 200,000 yen NLH Optimus on the Saturday night between them. Below that the card is broader than most European festivals of the same size: a 10-Game Mix Championship at 50,000 yen, a Poker Players Championship at 40,000 across four flights, PLO from 10,000 up to a 150,000 yen Highroller, and a run of limit draw and stud events including T.O.R.S.E., Triple Stud, B.E.S.T., Badugi Double Draw and a Dealer's Choice Drawmaha.

The detail worth noticing is at the other end. The Main Event's four live Day 1 flights, from 9 to 11 October, list no entry fee. At this stop they are enterable only with a JOPT ticket, won at satellites run in amusement poker rooms across Japan — the tour points players at its own satellite calendar and at the #JOPT hashtag to find the nearest one. The equivalent New Year festival nine months earlier let players buy in directly for 120,000 yen or use three tickets plus 7,000. Tickets are valid at any stop regardless of where they were won, and are worth 10,000 yen each against any side event.

That routes the entire Main Event field through the club network, which is a fair description of how Japanese poker works generally. Gambling is prohibited under Chapter 23 of Japan's Penal Code, so the clubs sell chips that are not exchanged for money, and a tour ticket is the one thing of transferable value a player can win in one. Side-event entries at the festival itself are paid at the venue as a facility-use fee plus a drink ticket, in cash, by card, by electronic money, in POKERWEB COIN or in USDT.

After Tokyo the tour moves to the Dojima River Forum in Osaka from 29 October to 3 November — one Day 1 flight for that Main Event is played in Tokyo on 12 October, the closing day of this festival — and then to its eleven-day New Year marathon back at Bellesalle Takadanobaba, from Christmas Eve to 3 January.
