Hungary's legal poker map: ten card-room licences, six clubs, five cities
The public register kept by Hungary's gambling regulator, SZTFH, lists ten card-room licences. They belong to six clubs: two large multi-room venues in Budapest and one club each in Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Kecskemét and Szombathely.
Hungary's poker clubs operate as licensed card rooms, and the regulator publishes every one of them. The Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (SZTFH) register currently shows ten card-room licences, and together they describe the country's club scene.
Budapest holds six of the ten. Duna Poker Center in the Duna Pláza on Váci út runs three licensed rooms, named Gold, Platinum and Silver, and Mirage Poker Club in the KÖKI shopping centre in District XIX runs three more, named Genius, Hero and Legend. Splitting one venue into several licensed rooms is how the two big Budapest clubs grow.
The other four licences are one club per city: Big Cash Póker Klub in Nyíregyháza, Classic Poker Club in Szeged's Tisza Center, Gauss Poker Club in Kecskemét and Palace Poker Club in Szombathely. Several are late-night clubs open only a few nights a week. The licences run as far ahead as 2040.
The regulator's own guidance explains why the list is so short. A card room can only be run by a company set up solely for that purpose, with at least 25 million forints of share capital, and it needs an SZTFH permit before it opens.
