Poker in Malaysia: online rooms, Genting and the law

Malaysia has one licensed casino, no licensed online poker, and three of the twenty most successful tournament players in the world. Paul Phua founded the Triton Super High Roller Series; Wai Kiat Lee and Chris Soyza are among its most consistent winners. For everyone else the picture is more complicated. This page explains what the law says, where the game is actually played, and which online rooms accept Malaysian players.

Is poker legal in Malaysia?

Gambling in Malaysia is governed by the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the Betting Act 1953, which prohibit gaming outside licensed premises and were written long before the internet. The only licensed casino is Resorts World Genting in the Genting Highlands, which admits non-Muslims aged 21 and over; the licensed lotteries and horse racing complete the legal list. For Muslim citizens, who make up the majority of the population, gambling is additionally an offence under state Syariah law regardless of venue. Online poker sits outside the licensing framework entirely: no site is authorised to operate, the regulator blocks access to some gambling domains, and players have occasionally been charged under the 1953 Act. Live poker in Malaysia

Resorts World Genting has hosted poker at various times, including Asian Poker Tour stops in the past; check the current table-games offering before travelling, as the room has not always been open. Beyond Genting, Malaysian players cross to Singapore's two casinos or fly to Manila, Macau and Jeju. Malaysian home games exist but have no legal protection.

Online poker for Malaysian players

WPT Global lists Malaysia among the markets it serves. Natural8, the Asian-facing site of the GG network, is popular with Malaysian players and supports ringgit deposits through e-wallets, and CoinPoker offers a crypto-only alternative. GGPoker's main client does not serve Malaysia. Malaysia does not tax gambling winnings of individuals, which is one reason the country's high rollers can keep their results abroad tax-free; professional income may still be examined by the tax authority.

Malaysia's players

Paul Phua of Miri, Sarawak, is the founder of Triton and sits 27th on the world's all-time money list with almost $39 million; in March 2026 he won the $150,000 Triton 10th Anniversary Special for $3.2 million. Wai Kiat Lee, ranked inside the GPI top 40, has about $27.7 million, and Kuala Lumpur's Chris Soyza about $20.9 million. Between them Malaysia's top eight players have all passed $13 million in career earnings.
