What is the difference between trips and a set?
A set is made from a pocket pair plus one matching board card; trips are made from one hole card plus a paired board. The ranking is identical, but trips are far easier for opponents to read, because the pair everyone can see makes the holding obvious.
Are trips strong?
Usually, but with an important caveat: anyone else with that rank also has trips, so the kicker decides, and a paired board means full houses are live. The visible pair also means opponents with nothing will fold, so the hand often wins less than it should.
