Set mining

Calling a raise with a small or medium pocket pair purely hoping to flop a set (three of a kind), which happens about 12% of the time. It relies on implied odds, so it needs deep stacks and an opponent who will pay off.
Example. Calling a 3 bb raise with 4-4 when both players have 200 bb, hoping to flop a four.
The classic rule of thumb is that you need to be able to win at least ten to fifteen times the call from the opponent's stack. Set mining is weak against short stacks, against 3-bets, and against players who fold when the board gets scary, but in loose live games it remains one of the most reliable profit sources.
