Polarised range

Also: polarized, polarised betting range

A range made up of very strong hands and bluffs with little in between. Large bets are typically polarised: you either have it or you are representing it.

Example. Shoving the river for three times the pot on a blank card is a polarised play: full houses and missed draws, nothing else.

When a player's range is polarised, medium-strength hands are usually checked or bet small, and big bets and overbets carry only the top and bottom of the range. The opponent's correct response is to defend with hands that beat the bluffs — bluff-catchers — at a frequency that keeps the bettor's bluffs break-even. The opposite is a merged (or linear) range.
