Having outlasted enough of the field to be guaranteed a payout. In most events roughly the top 12–15% of entrants finish in the money.

That you have outlasted the bubble and are guaranteed a payout whatever happens next. Usually abbreviated ITM.
What percentage of a tournament field gets paid?
Commonly around 10 to 15 per cent, though it varies by organiser and format. The Irish Poker Tour, for example, pays about the top 10 per cent with the director able to move between 8 and 12.
Is a high ITM percentage a sign of a good player?
Not on its own. A player who folds into the money often has a high ITM rate and a poor return on investment. Winnings relative to buy-ins is the more honest measure.
