A casino table game that uses poker hand rankings but is played against the dealer rather than against other players, so there is no pot, no betting between players and no skill edge over anyone but the house.
House-banked poker games look like poker and pay like a table game. Each player is dealt a hand and competes only against the dealer's hand; the casino sets fixed odds and keeps a mathematical edge that no amount of play can overcome, the way blackjack or three-card poker work.
The distinction matters when you are deciding where to travel. A casino that advertises "Poker" may be offering only a house-banked variant, in which case there is no ring game, no tournament and nobody to outplay. Two of the six state casinos in North Rhine-Westphalia, and every Genting casino in Britain outside Stratford, fall into this category.
The practical test is simple: ask whether players compete for a pot. If the answer is that everyone plays against the bank, it is a table game.
