Poker term
Deep stack
A tournament (or a cash-game stack) where players start with many big blinds — typically 100 or more — so there is room to play all streets rather than shove pre-flop. Deep-stack events run slower and reward post-flop skill.
Frequently asked questions
What is a deep stack tournament?
One with a large starting stack relative to the blinds — commonly 100 big blinds or more, with slow levels, so there is real post-flop play.
How does deep-stacked play differ?
Position and implied odds matter far more, speculative hands like suited connectors and small pairs gain value, and one-pair hands lose it. The deeper you are, the more a big bet on the river should worry you.
