Checking with the intention of raising after an opponent bets. It traps players who bet whenever they are checked to, and it is the standard way to build a pot out of position with a strong hand.

What is a check-raise?
Checking first, then raising after an opponent bets. It puts two betting increments into the pot where the opponent expected one, and it is only possible for the player acting first.
Why can you only check-raise out of position?
Because the play needs an opponent still to act behind you. A player in position who wants to raise simply does so when the action reaches them, so they have no use for it. The check-raise is the main compensation available for acting first.
When does a check-raise work best?
Against an opponent who bets a wide range automatically, such as a habitual continuation bettor. Their bet is not evidence of strength, so most of the time they are holding something that cannot withstand a raise.
Is check-raising allowed?
Yes, everywhere in casino and online poker. Some private home games once banned it as sandbagging, but it is a standard and legitimate play in the modern game.
