Online poker in Ontario: the only regulated market in Canada

Ontario is the one Canadian province where online poker is licensed, taxed and supervised locally rather than played on offshore sites. That has been true since April 2022, and it changes almost everything about how you should choose a room here.

Play online from Ontario

None of our partner operators currently accepts players from Ontario. We do not list any online poker room here. Ontario runs its own regulated online gambling market through iGaming Ontario and the AGCO, separate from the rest of Canada. GGPoker's affiliate team confirmed on 25 September 2026 that its permission for Canadian traffic excludes Ontario, so poker-in.com does not recommend an online room to Ontario players. Ontario residents should check the AGCO register for operators licensed in the province. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Is online poker legal in Ontario?

Yes, and uniquely so. Since 4 April 2022 Ontario has run its own regulated iGaming market. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) sets the rules and registers operators; iGaming Ontario is the provincial body operators contract with in order to offer games. A site that is not registered with the AGCO is not permitted to serve Ontario players, whatever it does elsewhere.

For a player that means the usual protections are real and enforceable here: audited random number generation, dispute resolution with a provincial body behind it, advertising rules, and self-exclusion that actually applies across licensed operators.

The minimum age is 19.

The ring-fence, and why your games look different

Ontario's poker is ring-fenced. Licensed sites may pool Ontario players only with each other, not with the international player pool the same brands run outside Canada. In practice that means smaller fields, fewer tables running at off-peak hours, and guarantees sized for a province of roughly fifteen million rather than a world.

It is a genuine trade-off, and worth naming plainly: you get a regulated, locally accountable operator, and you give up liquidity. Players who care most about big Sunday fields feel it; players who care most about knowing who is holding their money do not mind.

GGPoker in Ontario

GGPoker runs a separately licensed Ontario site under NSUS Limited, registered with the AGCO. It is a different legal entity and a different player pool from the international GGPoker, with its own account and its own promotions. If you are in Ontario, that is the version you can play.

Live poker in Ontario

The province's live scene runs through its commercial casinos. Casino Niagara gave its entire second floor to poker — eighteen tables, open from noon until just before 4am, with a bad beat jackpot, a weekly Wednesday tournament and a $550 event on the last Sunday of each month. The Toronto-area properties and Fallsview add to the rotation, and the WSOP Circuit visits Canada annually.

Tax

Canada does not tax recreational gambling winnings. Ontario follows the federal position: if poker is a hobby rather than a business, winnings are not income. Players whose poker is systematic, full-time and profitable enough to look like a business can be assessed differently, and the line is fact-specific. This is general information, not tax or legal advice — ask an accountant if the question is real money to you.
